If you’re planning a family summer holiday or a short break by the sea, you may be surprised to learn that there are miles upon miles of gorgeous sandy beaches in Belgium, just a short drive from Calais. The Flanders coastline stretches for 65 kilometres and has 13 resorts, each with its own character and unique atmosphere, from De Panne in the west, through Ostend and De Haan to Knokke-Heist in the east.
The gently shelving beaches are perfect for families, where children can build endless sand castles, or swim in safety thanks to the shallow waters and watchful eye of the local life guards. There are plenty of beach side activities including kite surfing, horse riding and volley ball.
The coastline is also a popular venue for a romantic stroll along the beach promenades and the local restaurants serve a mouthwatering variety of seafood and local specialities. Many of the seaside resorts also offer great shopping, museums and other activities. A new coastal walking path trail, following a network of paved and unpaved footpaths, gives visitors the chance to explore some of the regions natural parks as well as the beaches.
One of the best ways to see the coastline is by hopping on the coastal tram – the Kusttram – which winds its way all along virtually the entire coastline. Simply hop on and off when you like and explore to your heart’s content!
